1. Apple Cider Vinegar

This is the base of your tonic. Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar contains enzymes and probiotics that support gut health, which in turn strengthens the immune system. It also helps extract the beneficial compounds from the herbs and roots.

2. Garlic

Making your own fire cider is simple and deeply rewarding — plus, you can adjust the ingredients to suit your taste and needs. For example, I hate horseradish, so I leave that out. We love to add pomegranate or elderberry, and I have seen people add herbs like echinacea for an added immune boost. Keep in mind, anytime you use echinacea though to use it for a maximum of two weeks and no longer. Here’s how to get started:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fresh horseradish root, grated

  • 1 cup chopped onions

  • 10 cloves garlic, crushed or minced

  • 1–2 hot peppers (like jalapeño or cayenne), sliced

  • 1/2 cup grated fresh ginger root

  • 1/4 cup grated turmeric root (or 1 tbsp ground)

  • 1 lemon, sliced

  • Raw apple cider vinegar (enough to cover all ingredients)

  • Raw honey, to taste (added after straining)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare your ingredients: Chop or grate all fresh ingredients and place them in a clean quart-sized glass jar.

  2. Add vinegar: Pour raw apple cider vinegar over the ingredients until they are completely submerged.

  3. Seal and shake: Cover the jar with a lid (a plastic lid is best to prevent corrosion, or use some wax paper under the seal) and shake well.

  4. Infuse: Store the jar in a cool, dark place for 4–6 weeks. Shake it daily to keep everything mixed and active.

  5. Strain and sweeten: After steeping, strain out the solids using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Add raw honey to taste — enough to balance the heat and tang.

  6. Store: Pour your finished fire cider into a clean glass bottle and store it in the refrigerator or a cool pantry.

🫙 How to Use Fire Cider

Once your fire cider has infused for 4–6 weeks, strain out the solids and store the liquid in a glass jar. You can take:

  • 1 tablespoon daily for immune support ( I mix mine with a teaspoon of warm honey)

  • A small shot when you feel a cold coming on

  • A drizzle over greens or roasted veggies as a tangy dressing
